KYRIAKOS AMANATIDES HONOURED

In the evening of 4 June 2009, the third floor of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria was inundated with adoring crowds, eager to honour the life and contribution to the culture and the education of the Greek Community by Kyriakos Amanatides. The event, organized by the Greek Consul General, Mr Christos Salamanis, paid homage to what he termed an unsung hero of the Greek community. In his opening remarks, master of ceremonies and Panepirotic Federation of Australia Secretary, Kostas Kalymnios observed that people of the historical importance of Kyriakos Amanatides, do not need honours bestowed upon them. Rather, it is the entire Hellenic world that is honoured by recognizing his contributions over many years. He also made mention of Kyriakos Amanatides' long-standing contribution as secretary of the Committee in Support of Human Rights for the Greeks of Northern Epirus, a member of the Panepirotic Federation of Australia. Speakers and educators in their own right: Dr Kostas Vitkos, Professor George Kanarakis, Christos Fifis, Makis Kasapidis, Vlassis Mavraganis and Tassos Douvartzides each described the profound influence and effect Kyriakos Amanatides has had upon their lives and the Greek Community. He has been a chief examiner for Modern Greek in Victoria, a teacher, a mentor, a prolific author and critic, a founder of the Greek-Australian Cultural League of Melbourne, editor of the Greek literary journal "Antipodes" and through his long-standing weekly column in Neos Kosmos, constitutes the social conscience of an entire generation.
Kyriakos Amanatides' daughter Kalle spoke movingly in English on her emotions and childhood memories, explaining how her father's social and educational mission was inextricably intertwined within her upbringing.
A slideshow of photographs depicting Kyriakos Amanatides' early life and progression as a respected and revered community stalwart and leading intellectual, compiled by the Education Attache of the Greek Consulate Mr Ladopoulos was then screened.
In closing the event, Consul-General Christos Salamanis presented Kyriakos Amanatides with a commemorative certificate and a selection of the works of some of the greatest Greek authors and the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria presented him with an inordinately large bouquet of flowers. Kyriakos Amanatides thanked all present, attributing his success to the unfailing support of his wife, community intellectual and poet, Dina Amanatidou.

Ηταν πρωτοβουλία του Γενικού Προξένου της Ελλάδας κ. Χρήστου Σαλαμάνη η εκδήλωση που οργανώθηκε την Πέμπτη το βράδυ, 4 Ιουνίου 2009, υπό την αιγίδα του Γενικού Προξενείου, στο οίκημα της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας Μελβούρνης και Βικτωρίας για να τιμηθεί ένας ακούραστος εργάτης του πνεύματος, ένας αγωνιστής για την ελληνομάθεια, ένας συμπαραστάτης σ’ όλους τους αγώνες της Ελληνικής παροικίας της Μελβούρνης και της Αυστραλίας ολόκληρης, ο Κυριάκος Αμανατίδης. O Κυριάκος Αμανατίδης, μεταξύ των άλλων δραστηριοτήτων του, είναι επίσης γραμματέας της Επιστροπής Συμπαράστασης Ελλήνων Βορείου Ηπείρου, συνιστώσα οργάνωση της Πανηπειρωτικής Ομοσπονδίας Αυστραλίας.

Συγκεκριμένα μίλησαν ο Δρ. Κώστας Βίτκος, ο πανεπιστημιακό Δρ. Γιώργος Καναράκης, ο φιλόλογος Μάκης Κασαπίδης, ο ακαδημαϊκός Δρ. Χρήστος Φίφης και οι εκπαιδευτικοί Βλάσης Μαυραγάνης και Τάσος Δουβαρτζίδης. Συγκινητική ήταν η κόρη του Κυριάκου, η Καλλιρόη Θεοδωροπούλου που μίλησε τελευταία.
Πριν τη λήξη της εκδήλωσης ο Συντονιστής Εκπαίδευσης Χάρης Λαδόπουλος παρουσίασε διαφάνειες από τη ζωή του τιμώμενου.
Ακολούθησε η απονομή αναμνηστικής πλακέτας από τον Γενικό Πρόξενο και μια ανθοδέσμη από την Ελληνική Κοινότητα που την πρόφερε η Ανθή Σιδηροπούλου.

Την όλη εκδήλωση συντόνισε ο γραμματέας της Πανηπειρωτικής Ομοσπονδίας Αυστραλίας, Κωνσταντίνος Καλυμνιός.
